Quiet Power and The Modern Woman
Independent-minded, entrepreneurial, cultured and discerning about her wardrobe choices, the Modern Woman is a sartorial and societal archetype that emerged in retaliation to the sky-high heels, suck-you-in peplum dresses and chiropractor-on-speed-dial hardware-laden handbags. She now wanted function not frou-frou.
A well-versed personality on this matter is London-based freelance fashion editor and brand consultant, Navaz Batliwalla. In 2016, she published her first book ‘The New Garconne: How to be a Modern Gentlewoman’; Less guidebook, more friendly companion about the lifestyles, philosophies and wardrobe components of this new perspective. In the dawn of our AW23 Collection, we follow Navaz during a Day in the Life of as she unpacks the art of dressing for the Modern Woman.
‘I’M QUITE FORMULAIC ABOUT HOW I DRESS’
At the core of the modern wardrobe lies a rotation of key pieces. The icon white cotton poplin shirt is a classic that can be reimagined over time. Oversized, scoop-hemmed and pleat-backed, the generous cut allows for easy layering over a bright-coloured cashmere or fine-wool knit.
‘I LOVE BEING OUT AND ABOUT’
Today’s 24-hour lifestyle demands adaptable pieces that remain functional and beautiful throughout the day. Start with accessories. The Kent leather boot’s flared heel and chiselled toe offers a more sophisticated profile. Meanwhile, the glossy box leather Meret bag with its sleek silhouette (in two sizes) makes a luxe day-to-night alternative to your everyday tote.
‘I ALWAYS CHECK THE WEATHER’
Oversized through the shoulder to layer easily over slim-fit knits and striped cotton shirts, the herringbone Langford blazer is an accommodating companion during transeasonal months. Contrasts are key to styling. Wear it back with the Delmont jean in soft corduroy for a contemporary twist.
